The tragic collision claimed the lives of Kiercey Hickson, Quincy Jones, Haleigh Salazar, and Brad Palmer, leaving families, friends, classmates, and entire communities heartbroken by the sudden and unimaginable tragedy.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, emergency calls reporting a wrong-way driver began coming in around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Dispatchers alerted troopers after receiving reports of a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40. Law enforcement officers immediately mobilized in an attempt to locate and stop the driver before disaster struck.
Authorities say 26-year-old Michael Cruz of Tennessee was driving in the wrong direction on the interstate when his vehicle collided head-on with another car carrying four young passengers. The violent impact caused catastrophic damage and left the victims with fatal injuries at the scene.
The four victims were identified as 20-year-old Kiercey Hickson of Stillwater, 19-year-old Quincy Jones of El Reno, 18-year-old Haleigh Salazar of El Reno, and 18-year-old Brad Palmer, also of El Reno. All four young people were pronounced dead at the scene before emergency responders could transport them for medical treatment.
Michael Cruz survived the collision and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officials have not yet released additional information regarding his current medical status.
Investigators with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol continue working to determine exactly what caused Cruz to enter the interstate traveling in the wrong direction. Authorities are examining roadway evidence, surveillance footage, witness statements, and vehicle data as part of the ongoing investigation. At this stage, officials have not confirmed whether factors such as impairment, fatigue, distraction, or confusion contributed to the deadly crash.
