A tragic overnight crash along Interstate 75 South in Marietta, Georgia, claimed the life of 47-year-old Gordon Fields early Friday morning after his vehicle collided with a stopped tractor-trailer on the I-75 bridge near North Marietta Parkway. The deadly accident has left family members, friends, and the local community mourning the sudden loss while authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
According to Cobb County investigators, the crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. after traffic had already been severely disrupted for several hours due to an earlier accident that shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 75. Authorities stated that multiple vehicles remained stopped on the bridge while emergency crews worked to clear the previous crash scene and reopen traffic.
Police said one of the tractor-trailers involved in the incident was being operated by 29-year-old Mayki Marcelin of Davenport, Florida. Investigators reported that Marcelin’s truck remained stopped in the southbound lane even after traffic around the vehicle had started moving again following the reopening of the roadway.
Authorities further explained that a second tractor-trailer, driven by 35-year-old Daniel Granados of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was traveling southbound in the same lane when the driver suddenly encountered the stopped truck ahead. According to investigators, Granados attempted to avoid a direct collision by swerving at the last possible moment. His tractor-trailer reportedly grazed the side of Marcelin’s stopped truck during the maneuver.
Moments later, Gordon Fields approached the scene while driving a white Volkswagen. Investigators stated that Fields’ vehicle then crashed into the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer before he could safely avoid the obstruction in the roadway. The impact of the collision was described as severe and devastating.
Emergency medical personnel and first responders quickly arrived at the scene and attempted to assist those involved in the crash. Unfortunately, Gordon Fields was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. Authorities confirmed that no other serious injuries were immediately reported following the incident.
Both tractor-trailer drivers remained at the scene and are reportedly cooperating fully with law enforcement officials as the investigation continues. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges at this stage of the inquiry.
The deadly accident caused additional major traffic delays overnight along one of metro Atlanta’s busiest transportation corridors. Interstate 75 through Marietta regularly experiences heavy freight traffic and commuter congestion, particularly during overnight hours. The bridge area near North Marietta Parkway has also been known for traffic backups during accidents and emergency situations.
Investigators are continuing to examine all possible factors that may have contributed to the fatal crash. Authorities said they have not yet determined whether speed, driver distraction, visibility, roadway conditions, or other circumstances played a role in the incident.
As the investigation remains ongoing, loved ones continue grieving the sudden loss of Gordon Fields, who is being remembered by those closest to him as a devoted father and valued member of the community. Additional details may be released as authorities complete their investigation into the tragic Interstate 75 accident.
